One character has his hand placed on a hot stove. Two characters are seen on the ground fighting. One character is stabbed and left to bleed out. There are two scenes involving car accidents (one with a tree and one with a tractor-trailer). It also didn’t help that the pacing was incredibly slow. And yet, I walked out, around the mall saying to myself, “This movie didn’t add up.” That’s NEVER a good sign. Naomi Watts puts in a great performance, and the atmosphere is certainly eerie, and, hey, there are even some great scares from time to time. “Shut In” is without a doubt one of the most disjointed psychological thrillers I’ve seen in a while, and I’m not even sure if it falls under this category. Throw in a boy, a sudden snowstorm in Maine, some “supernatural” occurrences, and what do you get? Something that is supposed to resemble a movie…Ĭonfused? So was I. With Richard gone (his life taken in the accident), Mary is left to manage Stephen’s care while continuing to run her child psychology practice. As a result of the accident, Stephen no longer can talk, walk, or take care of himself. In the car, Richard and Stephen begin to argue, which leads to a horrific head on collision with a tractor-trailer. One afternoon, Mary and her husband Richard decide, after having learned that Stephen has been expelled from school, to send Stephen away to receive help for his behavioral issues. As she points out, it has been difficult being both a stepmother and psychologist to her 17-year old stepson, Stephen, and to her other patients. Naomi Watts' acting was phenomenal.Mary’s life hasn’t been an easy one. Jacob Tremblay was so cute in this movie. The actors/actresses did a great job portraying their characters. I like this movie even though it has a simple plot.

It's a fact, sure, but at the end of the day, to each his/her own. Clearly, this movie didn't sell well in theaters. It received mostly negative reviews from critics. In Rotten Tomatoes, it has a rating of 6%. Most moviegoers say that this movie is a trash. At least, I truly did not see that coming. Only to find out that the killer was already in the house and welded all the window and door shut with nails, so they couldn't go out. Since this movie is supposed to be a psychological horror story, I thought there would be a killer on the loose and trying to get inside, so they shut themselves in. Stephen was one of them.Īt first, I was wondering about the title. They just don't care for other human beings but themselves. So Stephen "killed" his biological father (he intentionally caused the car accident) just so he could be with her stepmother and keep her for himself? Was he that evil and desperate? Maybe? Psychopaths are like that, I guess. I mean, was he actually a teen psychopath (or sociopath) that got obsessed with his stepmother? What happened that made him feel that way? Was his obsession towards her stepmother maternal, or just plain sexual? I'm really confused. I don't know why Stephen, the stepson, acted the way he did. I was so shocked when it was revealed that Mary's stepson was not really in a vegetative state, but only faking it just so he could spend more time alone with her. This movie is quite scary and disturbing. Shut In is a 2016 psychological horror thriller film directed by Farren Blackburn, written by Christina Hodson, and starring Naomi Watts, Oliver Platt, Charlie Heaton, Jacob Tremblay, David Cubitt, and Clémentine Poidatz.
